Each morning as I come into my office, there is an old, wooden clothespin sitting on a window sill outside. It is one of my favorite things about our church building. No, it's not a particularly beautiful clothespin. There is nothing inherently special about it. However, I love to see this clothespin every morning because it is used each week to hold a set of bulletins that will be delivered to our shut-ins.
It represents care and compassion for those who cannot physically join us in worship. It represents a member who is dedicated to serving all of the members of our congregation. It represents a cup of water given in the name of Jesus (Mark 9:41). It represents how a simple act of kindness can do so much spiritual good.
The type of dedication and love that is wrapped up in this clothespin so wonderfully mirrors that of our Savior. When I have felt forgotten or alone, it is like He arrives with a bulletin in hand. Through little touches of kindness and simple reminders, He shows me that I am loved and seen. Psalm 139 comes to mind as I rejoice over this truth.
Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
What an incredible thing to ponder; that our God loves us so completely. Everything from the miraculous death-to-life salvation we have experienced to the small reminders of His gentle care in our day-to-day lives. And so today, I am once again thankful to see that clothespin still sitting on the window sill.
