I struggle to connect with my son from time to time. We don't always have the same interests, so finding common ground can be hard. We will go through seasons where he will get interested in something I like, but he's eight years old. Those seasons come and go quickly. Recently, it has been a dry season. All until I noticed he was getting too big for his Radio Flyer scooter and needed to order him a new one. Let me explain.
The Lord has been working on me during my morning devotional time. I've been reading through 1 and 2 Kings. In 2 Kings there is the familiar story of a widow who has run into financial trouble and has no way out. Elisha tells her to gather as many empty jars as she can. Elisha said that while she starts to fill those jars with the little oil she has left, it won't run out; not until she fills the last jar. In this, the Lord was promising to provide.
God showed me that I've got an empty jar that I've been holding onto for a long time. I've tried to think of the best way to fill it instead of trusting Him to provide what I need. The same day that I read that passage of Scripture, the two new scooters that I had ordered were delivered to my house. And that afternoon, the jar was filled.
Judah and I had a blast riding scooters in circles in our driveway. Since then we have been on "road trips" to our neighbors house and even dared to go down a ramp. In those moments, we are able to enjoy something together and keep building our relationship. Dry seasons are sure to come again. When my jar runs low, I pray I'll remember the scooter story.
